Our story

A photo studio in Andheri in 1970, a son who took what it taught him into advertising and business, and a grandson who now designs the software. The founder, Vishal Kiran Sharma, tells it.

  1. Portrait of Kiran K. Sharma

    1970 · Andheri

    My father opened a studio.

My father, Kiran K. Sharma, learned photography from Mitter Bedi, who photographed India’s new factories with the care most people reserve for temples. From him my father learned patience: you look until the thing in front of you shows you what it is. In 1970 he opened Studio Kiran in Andheri and pointed that patience at weddings, which are harder than factories. Nothing holds still, everyone is nervous, and there is no second take.

Over fifty years the studio grew to seventy photographers and artists, and the work grew with it: advertising, brand films, and the quiet institutional work that nobody frames and everybody needs. The method never changed. Look at the person properly. Then press the shutter.

1999 · Out into the world

    I grew up inside it.

I have been part of that studio for as long as I can remember, which means I learned what a bad photograph is long before I learned what a brief is. A bad photograph is one where the person is not really there. Everything else is equipment.

My own work started in fashion photography in 1999, moved into advertising films in 2001 and into agencies from 2006. Then I did something that had nothing to do with cameras: I built companies. Papa Brands, in mobile accessories, and later Timbresonic. Running a business is its own education. You learn what software is for by paying for software that fights you. You learn that people will work around any system that was not built around them. And you learn that the gap between what people say they need and what they actually do all day is where every failed project lives.

Somewhere in those years I also took Studio Kiran from a conventional set-up to a digital one. It turned out to be practice.

    New Vishal Vision

Then I brought it all back.

New Vishal Vision is the studio’s habit with everything I learned outside it. A film for a college is still a portrait: get the person right and the rest follows. A learning programme for a skilling mission is a wedding at state scale: hundreds of centres, several languages, no second take, and someone’s livelihood on the other side of the lens. So we go to the workshop and the classroom before we write a script, because that is where the people are.

The software came the same way. We built REOS for real estate and BandhanLive for weddings and family events because we were tired of working around other people’s systems, and we build for clients the way my father shot: look first, then make.

  4. Portrait of Sanidhya Vishal Sharma

    Today · The third generation

    And now my son.

Sanidhya leads the design of our software. He has a screen where his grandfather had a camera, and he was raised on the same question: who is this for, and have we actually looked at them?

Three generations. One habit. The equipment keeps changing. The question doesn’t.

Three practices, one way of working: look closely at the person it’s for, show them something small, then make it properly.
